When will the New Orleans Saints put it all together? The Saints offense is a high powered machine led by quarterback Drew Brees, but the defense annually fails them. This season New Orleans brought in defensive whiz Gregg Williams to help inject the D with a more aggressive playbook. Along with Williams, some proven veterans have been added to bolster a defense that ranked 26th in points allowed last season. You can currently bet the Saints +175 to win the NFC South in 2009.
Drew Brees heads New Orleans pass-happy attack that ranked #1 in both scoring and total yards in ‘08. Brees is one of the smartest players in the NFL, with his ability to read defenses and find the open man with regularity. Brees’s main target WR Marques Colston has emerged as a menace near the goal line, and is complemented by a strong cast of wideouts. The offensive line was one of the main sources to the Saints offensive success with their ability to pass-protect and maul defenders in the running game. Poised for a breakout year on offense is all-purpose RB Reggie Bush. Bush is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL and has added some muscle this off-season to try and improve his durability.

New defensive coordinator Gregg Williams likes to attack from all angles, but his limitations in the secondary could make his approach more conservative. The secondary should get a boost with the return of starting CB Tracy Porter who missed 11 games last year. Also added to help the pass-defense was free safety Darren Sharper who is an intelligent leader that can still make plays. The linebacking core has a bonafide star in middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma who seemed to be the Saints lone linebacker at times last season. The defensive line has depth and a pair of quality DE’s in Will Smith and Charles Grant. The defense has enough personnel in place for coordinator Gregg Williams to work with. Look for the Saints to settle somewhere in the middle of the pack in the defensive rankings this year. Punt returner Reggie Bush is feared by special teams coaches around the NFL.
Watch out for New Orleans this year folks. The Saints have the ability to go a long way if the defense holds it’s end of the bargain. Drew Brees is a prolific passer, and if Reggie Bush can stay healthy, this team is poised for a 1st place NFC South finish and a deep run into the postseason. The NFL odds to win the Super Bowl have been posted with the Saints at +2000.
