The New Orleans Saints had a great season last year with QB Drew Brees throwing for over 5,000 yards. Despite Drew Brees outstanding season the Saints failed to make the playoffs as they hope to make it this season with an improved defense. The Saints finished 8-8 last year and at the bottom of the NFC South. QB Drew Brees threw 34 TD’s after throwing for 5,069 yards. Drew Brees is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but can be put up enough points to make up for a lacking running game and a subpar defensive unit? This year he hopes to have a healthier offensive arsenal. If TE Jeremy Shockey is healthy and plays consistently, and WR Marques Colston, WR Devery Henderson and WR Lance Moore all keep catching the ball, the Saints could lead the league in scoring once again. Their struggling running game was led by RB Pierre Thomas who ran for 625 yards with nine TD’S. Considering they had two of the best in the league in RB Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister it’s not looking good for their running game, they both combined for seven TD’s last season. If Deuce McAllister doesn’t return to the club, this means that Pierre Thomas and Bush will see increased carries in the ground game, but either way the offense starts and ends with Brees and his strong aerial attack.
On defense they brought in a lot of defensive backfield players to help strengthen a unit that ranked 23rd in passing yardage allowed. They got first round draft pick Malcolm Jenkins and free agent acquisitions Jabari Greer, Pierson Prioleau and Darren Sharper. New defensive coordinator Greg Williams is bringing a hopefully upgraded scheme and mindset, as well as a few favorites from the Jaguars squad he coached last season. This includes Pierson Prioleau and defensive end Paul Spicer who combined for 60 tackles. Spicer should provide a needed boost to the pass rush. The play of LB’s Jonathan Vilma, should improve thier backfield and the line. They’ll need to if the club's defense is going to be a strength instead of a liability.
Odds to win NFC South – 17/10
